Ever since a large group of people were successful in their crusade to get the Snyder Cut released, thus Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max was born, a splinter cell of that regime of fans have looked to their next goal of getting David Ayer’s cut of the 2016 Suicide Squad. As the vocal minority continues to push for this release, Ayer himself is helping to spearhead the movement. He has talked openly over the situation that happened with the studio and has mentioned numerous times that his cut is done and ready to go. Adding fuel to that fire, Ayer will randomly release some concept art or photos that fans didn’t get in the initial cut – and the latest is an alternate look for Jared Leto’s Joker.
This photo looks to be of a Joker with even more face tattoos, including ‘haha’ eyebrows and a thick-lined black ink smiley face around his own mouth. Top that off with two massive chains, a leather jacket and a shotgun, and this is the look they almost went with for the film.
It is no secret that this incarnation of the Joker in the most reviled by fans, mostly for the staunch departure from the traditional attire we are used to (not to mention the tattoos). Heath Ledger’s interpretation showed how you can differ from the comics look and make it your own without going so over the top that ‘ridiculous’ doesn’t even cut it. Even Ayer himself has admitted that he regrets the aesthetic of his Joker – which is why it is a little odd that he keeps putting out new stills of him.
However, one of the biggest blunders by the studio was cutting so much of the Joker out of the film. There was supposedly enough footage of Leto’s performance that you could cut together a separate film out of it that surrounded the iconic villain. While that will most likely never happen, never say never when it comes to the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad.
