Venom: Let There Be Carnage is doing well in the theaters right now as the world tries to get back to normal and go back to the movies. Whilst the film is a bit polarizing with fans, the post-credits scene has been universally praised and commended for bringing Venom into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as everyone has wanted. That Spider-Man/Venom crossover is finally going to happen, bringing Tom Hardy and Tom Holland face to face, possibly as soon as Spider-Man: No Way Home! Now, with that interaction on the horizon, people are clamoring for Venom 3.
Speaking with Digital Spy, Hardy addressed the possibility of a third Venom film:
“These things [usually] come in threes. If there’s going to be a new one – and they depend heavily on the success of each individual one, so you can’t count on them ever happening again – every one has got to be as if it was the last one. But I think it’s really important, if you go into something, thinking that one, two and three are the same… the same story, the same film. So that you don’t surprise yourself by being caught out by suddenly having to do a third from nowhere. There’s got to be some continuity into a third and fourth and fifth, and if somebody says ‘no’, that’s fine. Let it go, and you move on to something else.”
This is actually quite a smart take. It happens all too often in Hollywood that a film is left wide open for a sequel, ending on a cliffhanger and leaving tons of questions unanswered, only to not do well and thus the studio cuts their losses and doesn’t continue the story. It happens all the time.
So, if you treat each film as if it is the end, you can make sure the story is done well and that you don’t cling to something that is not a definite. That being said, this sequel does leave a bit open for a third film. Especially when it comes to Detective Mulligan and the possibility of Toxin. But, besides that little Easter Egg of sorts and that post credits scene that brings Venom into another universe, the film really is wrapped up and a sequel isn’t necessary.
That being said, a trilogy is the tentpole for a franchise like this. Comic book movies especially tend to work on the trilogy format of story telling. For all of their faults, though, the Venom films have been finite stories. Had this sequel never had happened, the first Venom was a complete story, only really teasing a sequel with their post credits scene. So, if a third film never happens, fans won’t be left with too many questions. And if it does happen, we’re all the better.
