One of the issues which Warner Brothers doesn’t face where creating their films is the rights to their comic characters, with all of them being with studio. Unfortunately this benefit is not shared by rivals Marvel, with rights for characters belonging to several different studios. This is especially unfortunate for Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, who has plans for a few characters which he can’t get his hands on.
During a recent Facebook Q&A, the Slither director revealed that there are a couple of characters who he would definitely like to utilize if he could telling his followers:
“I would love the [Fantastic Four] to be a part of the MCU…Fox owns so many great villains and cosmic characters I would love to play around with including Annihilus — and I think they own Kang.”
For those who are unaware of these characters, Kang is a conqueror who traveled back in time to battle the Avengers, unfortunately, despite featuring primarily as an Avengers villain he made his debut as ‘Rama Tut’ in the pages of Fantastic Four #19, Eleven months before his first appearance in The Avengers comics. Annihilus is slightly more clear-cut with his origins being very much based around the negative zone, a mainstay of the Fantastic Four Comics since 1966.
Both of these villains would be excellent additions to the Marvel universe, with Kang easily being an excellent candidate for a future Avengers film. This isn’t the first time an issue with rights has interfered with Gunn’s plans, the Sakaaran soldiers in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy were originally intended to be Badoon, but unfortunately those rights are also tied up with Fox studios. Hopefully we will see the rights revert or at the very least some sort of deal between the studios, much like the one between Sony and Disney which brought Spider-Man to the MCU.
What do you think? Would you like to see these villains in the MCU? Are there any others you would like to see? Let us know below!
