Warner Bros. Discovery currently has several continuities at play all based on DC Comics. This includes the larger DC Universe launched by DC Studios as well as Matt Reeves’ The Batman and its connected projects which were in the works prior to the DCU. Now DC Studios co-head James Gunn has said he’s open to The Batman star Robert Pattinson joining the DCU himself.
Pattinson, who plays a new version of Bruce Wayne aka Batman in The Batman, was previously said to be excluded from the DC Universe. This would allow the character to function in his own continuity under Reeves’ direction while the DCU could include a different Batman that better suits the stories that particular continuity would be exploring.
Now, as shared in an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn shared the following about possibly including Pattinson as the star of the DCU’s upcoming Batman film The Brave and the Bold. Here’s what he stated:
“I would never say zero, because you just never know. But it’s not likely. It’s not likely at all. I’ll also say Batman Part II is not canceled. That’s the other thing I hear all the time — that Batman Part II is canceled. It’s not canceled. We don’t have a script. Matt’s slow. Let him take his time. Let him do what he’s doing. God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man.”
As such, we could still see Robert Pattinson become Batman for the DC Universe, creating a very interesting link between the two continuities. Though Gunn also insists “it’s not likely,” so we shouldn’t expect that plan to come to light. The most likely scenario is that Pattinson will continue to do The Batman: Part II while the DCU casts their own version of Batman with another actor.
With that said, Gunn is right, “you just never know.” We’ve seen how unpredictable things can be with DC adaptations, and at the very least, we could see Robert Pattinson play some kind of variant of Batman in the DCU in the future. As always, we’ll just have to see what happens. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding The Batman: Part II, The Brave and the Bold, and any other DC projects as we have them.
