The popular television series The Last of Us is facing backlash for including a lesbian sex scene. It’s not the first time the series has faced such backlash, as the first season included gay characters and plot lines that were met with similar online turmoil. Now, however, fans are disappointed by the inclusion of a lesbian sex scene between Bella Ramsey’s Ellie and Isabela Merced’s Dina.
In addition to the lesbian sex scene, the episode had several other major moments for the two characters. For example, Merced’s character Dina reveals that she is pregnant. This prompts Ramsey‘s Ellie to have a response that has been made fun of on social media: “I’m going to be a dad.”
Some viewers are review-bombing the series and this particular episode, while others are taking the time to simply complain on the social media platform of their choice. For example, numerous tweets surfaced as backlash against the episode, a few of which you can see below:
I could smell the gay from a mile in the season of the last of us since season 2 episode 1 and that one gay episode from season 1
why they gotta ruin a decent show?

Wait, wait…..in The Last Of Us the potato head kid has a lesbian fingerbang session with a girl? Seriously? I thought everyone was kidding.

The “I’m gonna be a dad” line in the last of us show season 2 is so fucking bad and lame. I feel bad for all the people who worked on the show and especially feel bad for the actress who played Ellie for having to say such a cringe line.

The Last of Us is a good show but please stop with all the woke shit. Bella Ramsey is not gonna be a dad, get that cringe outta here.

With these complaints in mind, there are still plenty of supporters of both the episode and the series as a whole. The Last of Us continues to receive positive reviews on platforms including Rotten Tomatoes. So while there is some backlash over the lesbian sex scene, it’s unlikely that The Last of Us will cease telling the LGBTQ stories the creators have in mind.
As mentioned, the first season contained a LGBTQ relationship as the centerpiece of its third episode titled “Long, Long Time,” in which the two characters Frank and Nick were given an expanded look at their gay relationship. Though the series was similarly review bombed and criticized at the time, it’s clearly not going to stop the series from approaching these themes.
