Nostalgia is kicking into high gear for fans of late 1990’s and early 2000’s horror movies. With the success of 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI, the horror genre is booming with similar revivals including reboots for I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Faculty. Now another 1998 cult classic horror movie is getting the reboot treatment.
Interestingly, this particular movie already received two sequels. The first follow-up was released in 2000 and the second follow-up was released in 2005.
With the passing years between each installment the films moved further away from the story of the original title, however, so it’ll be interesting to see how a new reboot announced in 2025 handles the material.
Here’s what THR shared regarding the project:
“Screen Gems’ 1990s slasher movie Urban Legend is getting a modern era reboot.
“The Sony genre division is in early development on a new version of the 1998 feature, hiring Shanrah Wakefield to pen the script.”
The outlet adds that Gary Dauberman is set to produce via Coin Operated, while one of the original film’s producers, Neal Moritz, is currently “in negotiations to produce as well.” Other details regarding the project and the other individuals behind the project are currently being kept under wraps. Though we do know something about the new plot.
According to the outlet, the new reboot of the 1998 horror flick “aims to be an examination of what an urban legend looks like in a post-digital world.” This is certainly a worthwhile angle, especially because the internet has completely defined the types of urban legends we see today and how exactly they spread in today’s social media landscape.
Hopefully we’ll have more details soon. With two decades having passed since the last installment in the Urban Legend film franchise, it’s about time for a revival. Especially while the nostalgia for 1990’s horror is at an all-time high. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more news as we have it.
