The I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise has long drifted away from its original continuity. Excitingly enough, however, a new sequel will follow the events of 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer and 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer as fans can see in the trailer below.
The new sequel, given the same name as the original film in a trend made popular by the likes of 2018’s Halloween and 2022’s Scream, similarly brings back the franchise’s classic protagonists in the same vein. Jennifer Love Hewitt will return as Julie James while Freddie Prinze Jr. returns as Ray Bronson.
The characters were last seen in 1998’s follow-up. As such, it’s been quite a few decades since we’ve seen their whereabouts, and the new sequel is expected to focus on a new cast of characters. Everyone has insisted that Hewitt’s Julie and Prinze’s Ray will serve important roles in the story, however, so we’ll have to see how this sequel unfolds.
Here’s the first official trailer for I Know What You Did Last Summer:

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directed the film. The screenplay was written by Leah McKendrick and Sam Lansky and co-written by Robinson. In addition to Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. who return as their classic characters, the film stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Gabbriette Bechtel, Austin Nichols, Lola Tung, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez.
The next installment in the franchise, I Know What You Did Last Summer, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 18, 2025. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates on the highly-anticipated follow-up as we have them. As for now, the newly-released I Know What You Did Last Summer trailer gives fans a good look at what we can expect to see including the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. as their characters from the original two movies.
