The 1988 horror movie Killer Klowns from Outer Space always seemed like the basis for the best horror franchise that never was. Fortunately, in recent years, the popularity of the movie has grown exponentially to treat fans with new merchandise, video games, and theme park attractions. Now it looks like Amazon MGM Studios has a Killer Klowns from Outer Space remake on their slate – with none other than Ryan Gosling attached to produce.
Details are scarce, and with a lack of a formal announcement, what information we do have should be taken with a grain of salt. As shared via insider Jeff Sneider, however, he’s adamant that Amazon MGM Studios is developing this Killer Klowns from Outer Space remake. It’s not exactly a stretch, either, given how popular the movie has become in recent years. Amazon MGM Studios has also been digging through their library to find properties worth reviving.
For those unfamiliar, the Killer Klowns From Outer Space movie revolves around aliens that resemble circus clowns that come to Earth in search of food. As it just so happens, their diet includes dissolved humans zapped into acidic cotton candy cocoons. The movie takes a comedic approach to the tropes established in sci-fi and horror movies of both the 1950s and 1980s, and as such, a large deal of the film’s humor comes from weird variations of clowns and their gags.
A large part of the creativity present in the film comes from the Chiodo Brothers, a trio of siblings that worked together to create the film. Stephen Chiodo directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Charles Chiodo, while both Stephen and Charles worked alongside Edward Chiodo to create the special effects. Horror fans may also recognize their work on all four original Critters movies, as they were the puppeteers who created the alien “Krites” from that particular series.
The Chiodo Brothers have struggled for years to get a continuation of Killer Klowns from Outer Space off the ground. With attempts including stand-alone sequels, trilogies, and even television projects, only a video game has come to light so far. If this project with Amazon MGM Studios is legit, however, then it looks like we may finally be getting a new Killer Klowns from Outer Space movie after all.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Killer Klowns news as we have it, especially if Ryan Gosling is attached to produce. He could have the power necessary to finally get the film franchise revved up again for the big screen.
