The Happy Death Day movie franchise has been one of the more popular recent attempts at a slasher franchise. At the same time, however, it’s been one of the most underutilized. Fortunately for fans, it’s just been announced that Happy Death Day 3 is officially moving forward.
The first two installments, Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U, both starred Jessica Rothe as the protagonist of the series. Her character, named Tree, finds herself living the day of her murder repeatedly in the first film, with the second taking place during a loop of the day after.
Now, at a screening of the two films, Jessica Rothe has confirmed that the long-awaited third installment is moving forward. As shared via Bloody-Disgusting, she was joined by director Christopher Landon who helmed both films. The two were appearing as part of a double feature screening at the American Cinematheque, and according to the outlet, Rothe had this to say:
“The third movie is moving forward.”
Landon, the director of both installments who will presumably return for the third, confirmed her statement with the following:
“It is moving forward.”
Without anything else to go on, it sounds as though the third installment is still in its early stages. However, six years following the release of Happy Death Day 2U, it’s still great news to hear. Hopefully more details will be revealed in the near future. As for now, it remains to be seen how Happy Death Day 3 will continue the story of its predecessors.
Previous incarnations of the project included the working title “Happy Death Day to Us” and a potential Peacock miniseries that would have consisted of three parts. However, it looks like Universal may be exploring the franchise’s future with a more traditional feature film follow-up. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Happy Death Day news as we have it.
