The Minecraft video game franchise reached a new level of popularity with the release of A Minecraft Movie. The movie has appealed to audiences that have been playing the game for years and kids that are just beginning to get into the franchise. As such, there is plenty of room for a sequel, and it looks like sequel talks have already started to follow-up A Minecraft Movie.
The film stars Jack Black as Steve, one of the iconic character templates from the game, and a number of new characters that find themselves transported to the Minecraft world. Now, according to director Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie could include a different character that’s just as integral to the franchise’s mythos.
Firstly, as shared while speaking with Deadline, Hess emphasizes how much fun it would be to create A Minecraft Movie 2:
“Oh, man. Well, it would be so much fun. We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to,” Hess began.
“I would have a blast doing the sequel,” he continues, “and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world.”
Hess adds that fans also seem open to the potential left by the ending of the film:
“The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”
As for what character could lead the sequel in the way that Jack Black’s Steve led the first film, Hess already has that planned out:
“The character we teased is Alex, the other massively critical character in Minecraft. It’s Steve (Black) and Alex, and so that’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt.”
With the financial success and surging popularity that A Minecraft Movie is already experiencing, a sequel seems to be inevitable, but nothing has been officially announced at this time. If there are talks already happening, however, then it seems like a sequel to A Minecraft Movie could happen sooner rather than later.
