There’s been one certain thing proven about the film industry – nothing is certain. A major movie from two of the biggest directors in Hollywood was recently released. It was based on an extremely popular illustrated novel. With this formula for success, the film managed to become the worst reviewed movie of 2025, and yet it’s also taking the top spot on Netflix.
It’s been a whirlwind of a project to follow. With negative reviews from fans of the original book, casual viewers, and critics, it can be surprising to see that the film is still the #1 movie on Netflix. Of course, given the popular talent involved, many of the platform’s subscribers were bound to check the movie out.
At the time of this writing, it is still sitting at the number one spot on Netflix. Because the movie is a Netflix exclusive, this no doubt bodes well for the project. However, with negative reviews also spreading on social media, it remains to be seen how well it will continue to perform.
The massive live-action production, titled The Electric State, was produced with a whopping $320 million budget. The inflated cost of the movie is one reason critics are being so tough on the film. While it’s one thing to have a sci-fi movie with average reviews, it’s another to have something like The Electric State underperform critically.
The film, an expensive production from the directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, along with stars Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt attached, is still managing to completely nosedive on ratings websites. Other cast members include fan-favorite stars like Ke Huy Quan, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, and Giancarlo Esposito.
However, some fans still find the movie to be suitable viewing material. As recorded on Rotten Tomatoes, the platform’s Popcornmeter has given the film a 75% rating, while the Tomatometer has 13%. Ultimately, we’ll have to see what the future holds for The Electric State, but it’s clear that this isn’t going to be as universally a hit as the Russo Brothers’ other endeavors even if it’s dominating Netflix.
