The 2019 hit Once Upon a Time in Hollywood quickly became a fan-favorite for both Quentin Tarantino fans and mainstream audiences. Now, several years later, the unthinkable is starting to happen. It looks like a Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel is being fast-tracked for production – with none other than David Fincher attached to direct!
Tarantino, who both wrote and directed the 2019 film, is stepping back from the director’s seat this time around. He has famously teased that his next project – his tenth film – will be his last. It seems as though he didn’t want to make it a sequel, but nonetheless, he seemingly had a story so good that he had to get it made.
As shared via The Playlist:
“David Fincher and Brad Pitt are putting aside everything they’re working on to direct and star in a sequel to ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood‘ written by Quentin Tarantino.”
If that wasn’t surprising enough, the film is being put together at Netflix. Fincher has a first-look deal with the streaming service and Tarantino has had several positive collaborations with Netflix in the past, including the streamer’s agreement to carry an extended version of his film The Hateful Eight.
Plot details regarding the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel under wraps, but the outlet notes that it seems to have evolved from Tarantino’s unmade screenplay titled The Movie Critic and Brad Pitt will reprise his role as Cliff Booth for the project. The screenplay was written to be Tarantino’s tenth and final film before he backed away from the idea. Now he seems to have found another way to get it made.
Details regarding Tarantino’s deal with Netflix, including the involvement of Fincher, suggest that the film “will probably end up being around a $200 million budget” that will “shoot in California this July.” The project is said to be fast-tracked with casting beginning soon.
Additionally, while The Playlist didn’t indicate that Leonardo DiCaprio would be joining Pitt for the film, insider Jeff Sneider suggests that DiCaprio is, in fact, involved. However, it looks like he would only have a smaller role as Rick Dalton for the film, with more of the focus being put on Pitt’s Cliff Booth character. Though if that’s not enough, Margot Robbie’s team has reportedly informed the studio that she is available if needed as well!
Hopefully we’ll have more news soon because this is shaping up to be a monster-sized project. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more news regarding the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood follow-up from director David Fincher, writer Quentin Tarantino, and stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio as we have them.
