In the spirit of many other horror offerings jumpstarted by James Wan, the Insidious film franchise has spawned several installments including an upcoming spin-off. Now, however, a separate upcoming Insidious film has been announced by Sony. The new movie, which will essentially be Insidious 6, is set for a 2026 release date.
The new announcement, as shared via Variety, means that fans will have a new Insidious film to look forward to sooner rather than later. The most recent installment in the series, Insidious: The Red Door, was released last year in 2024. The very first installment, however, goes back to 2010. In less than two decades, Insidious has become a rather large and successful horror franchise, not unlike Saw or The Conjuring which also had early films directed by James Wan.
The new film, dubbed Insidious 6 until more details are released, was confirmed by Sony during their CinemaCon presentation. Details regarding the project are currently being kept under wraps, and as such, it’s unclear if franchise regulars like Patrick Wilson, Ty Simpkins, or Lin Shaye will be returning. However, it is said to be separate from the aforementioned spin-off which is titled Thread: An Insidious Tale.
News of a sixth film isn’t exactly surprising given the franchise’s successful track record at the box office. In fact, with only a $16 million budget, last year’s Insidious: The Red Door earned $189 million worldwide. It’s worth noting that Sony was preparing a sixth film in 2025 following the release of that film, but there hasn’t been any news since, and premature sequel announcements have often dissipated in the past. This time, however, Sony seems to be sticking to their word that a new Insidious film is coming later this year.
Insidious 6 is currently scheduled by Sony for a release on August 21st, 2026. It should certainly be a good way to end the summer. Hopefully more details will be released soon, but for now, we’ll have to see what happens with this mysterious follow-up.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more information regarding the Insidious film franchise as we have it. The franchise clearly still has plenty of life in it. Hopefully, however, the new entry will continue to perform well with fans of the series.
