The latest live-action remake from Disney, Snow White, has finally been released to theaters. The controversial film was in production for several years, and after facing a number of issues, the time to see how it performs at the box office has come. However, it looks like Snow White has actually flopped during its opening weekend.
The Disney production is estimated to have been made with a budget between $240 to $270 million. This makes the film one of the most expensive movies ever made, and therefore once that will have difficulty recouping its costs at the box office. In fact, according to THR, the film needs to gross at least “$500 million or more” to reach its “box office safety net.”
At the time of this writing, however, the outlet notes that Snow White has only made $87.3 million globally during its opening weekend. Domestically, the film only earned $43 million. The film underperformed against estimates that it would at least make $100 million during its opening weekend.
In most cases, a film with those numbers could still see success with positive word-of-mouth. Due to the ongoing controversies surrounding the film, however, and its lackluster initial performance, it could be dire to the film’s overall box office run. A comparison could be made to another major Disney flop, Dumbo, which only earned $45 million domestically during its opening weekend in 2019.
Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see what happens with Snow White. For now, however, things aren’t off to a good start for the flick, the production of which can be traced back to 2019 when Marc Webb signed on to direct. Disney might have to rely on the hype for its other live-action remake coming this year, Lilo & Stitch, which seems to be receiving more positive reactions from fans so far.
