It isn’t always easy getting a sequel to a fan-favorite movie off the ground. Especially when that particular film was released several decades ago. However, Netflix seems to have pulled off the impossible, with the first trailer for Happy Gilmore 2 bringing back star Adam Sandler and more for the follow-up.
Adam Sandler, who played the titular character in the original film, is set to reprise his role for the sequel. Other returning cast members include Julie Bowen, who will return as his love interest Virginia, and Christopher McDonald as his nemesis, Shooter McGavin. Fans can also expect to see Dennis Dugan as Doug Thompson and Ben Stiller as Hal L.
In addition to familiar faces, the film also stars a variety of newcomers, including Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Nick Swardson, Benny Safdie Scott Mescudi, Jacob Friedman, and Travis Kelce. Indeed, Netflix appears to be pulling out all the stops to make this a successful sequel to 1996’s Happy Gilmore.
Here’s the official trailer for Happy Gilmore 2:

In addition to those in front of the camera, the new sequel was directed by Kyle Newacheck, while Tim Herlihy and Adam Sandler returned to pen the sequel’s script. This long-awaited follow-up has been in the works for at least several years now, so with the film’s impending release in just a few months, this trailer is a nice way for fans to see what’s in store.
The original film was released by Universal Pictures on February 16, 1996. With a $12 million budget it managed to earn $41.2 million at the box office. After its theatrical run, however, it’s only continued to grow in popularity – with its cult following having paved the way for 2025’s sequel.
Happy Gilmore 2 is scheduled to be released via Netflix on July 25, 2025. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated sequel as we have them. For now, however, it’s exciting for fans to see not only Adam Sandler but so many other familiar faces back for the follow-up.
