Demi Moore starred in 2024’s The Substance, a body horror movie that made it surprisingly far in the industry. In fact, it seemed as though Demi Moore was bound to receive an Oscar for Best Actress at the 97th Annual Academy Awards. Ultimately, however, the award went to Mikey Madison for her performance in Anora, meaning Demi Moore lost at this year’s Oscars.
While it’s always unlikely for the Academy to recognize a horror movie, it has happened in the past, and many fans of The Substance were hoping it would happen again. At the very least, the film still managed to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling, but that hasn’t stopped complaints from spreading on social media.
As shared below, many social media users are humorously and seriously criticizing the Academy for recognizing Mikey Madison and Anora over Demi Moore and The Substance. Some are even drawing similarities between this real-life event and the plot of The Substance, in which Moore’s character is an aging actress struggling to find success in an industry where people prefer younger women.
Interestingly, as shared via Daily Mail, Moore did have a reaction to Madison’s win at the show. The outlet received word from lip reader Nicola Hickling that Moore responded by saying “‘nice’ but she isn’t smiling when she says it.” Hickling adds that Moore’s “body is almost nodding like she had to force herself to say it.”
Mikey Madison revealed that the two actresses have texted and said:
“She’s one of the sweetest, kindest women I’ve ever met, and I’m so grateful that I was able to meet her and witness her brilliance and talent in person, I adore her and I can’t wait to see what she does next, what kind of characters she brings us. I think we’re all so ready and excited to see that.”
Demi Moore posted about The Substance, saying:
“As this awards season comes to a close, I’m so overwhelmed with gratitude for this journey,” she wrote in her caption, shouting out the “cast, crew, and fans” of The Substance, including writer-director Coralie Fargeat and costar Margaret Qualley. “So grateful for my team, my fellow nominees, and everyone who has made this experience so full of joy and light.”
She added a congratulations to Madison, saying:
“a huge congratulations to #MikeyMadison — can’t wait to see what you do next.”
While Moore remained calm and collected, no doubt feeling some disappointing in losing the award, social media users were much more vocal. Here are the responses they’ve shared on X regarding Mikey Madison winning Best Actress over Demi Moore at the Oscars:
The layers of irony to this year’s race as it relates to The Substance with Demi Moore losing to a younger actress. It’s kinda sad. #Oscars pic.twitter.com/Dj3IVDihvy

With these responses in mind, Demi Moore apparently had her own way of celebrating after the event. Her daughter, Tallulah Willis, used Instagram to share a photo of Moore enjoying a hefty serving of fries following the ceremony:

Although Moore ultimately didn’t win, it’s nice to see that she’s being a good sport, and furthermore how far The Substance has come. It’s still a great day for horror fans to see what a horror movie can do. And hopefully one day it will make it easier for the next horror win at the Academy Awards.
