Last year’s release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice proved that development hell is essentially a thing of the past. This is now going to be further proven with the latest classic 80s movie that’s now set to receive a sequel 40 years after its initial release.
The 1985 fan-favorite has been beloved for decades, and while it has existed as a stand-alone movie, fans have been desperate to revisit their favorite characters from the film. Now they should finally have their chance.
The film follows characters that eventually set off on an adventure to find hidden treasure following the discovery of an old map. It’s unknown what adventure they could find themselves on this time around, but fans are no doubt eager to catch up with these characters and how their lives have changed in the years since the original film was released.
As shared by Variety, Warner Bros. has officially hired a writer to tackle the sequel to the 1985 classic. Here’s what the outlet was able to share regarding the project:
“Warner Bros. has hired Potsy Ponciroli to write the script for the sequel,” the outlet revealed, referring to The Goonies. The 1985 flick was directed by the late Richard Donner and written by Chris Columbus hot off the release of Gremlins.
“Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will produce for Amblin Entertainment alongside Chris Columbus, who wrote the original ‘Goonies‘ script. Lauren Shuler Donner will executive produce.”
The outlet also notes that there hasn’t been any director attached to helm the project, and furthermore, there aren’t any plot details available at this time. However, one can’t imagine there will be a Goonies sequel without the titular Goonies. The title refers to an ensemble cast of kids and teens in the original film played by the likes of Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Martha Plimpton.
