The 2021 film Mortal Kombat revived the big screen film franchise based on the video games of the same name. It gave fans all-new versions of numerous beloved characters from the franchise, though one name was absent: Johnny Cage. They were clearly saving the character for the sequel, and now as fans can see below, our first look at Karl Urban as Johnny Cage has been revealed for Mortal Kombat 2.
The first look is also our first look in general at the sequel, which is coming several years after the first film was released in 2021. Though it took several years for this follow-up to come into fruition, it certainly looks like Warner Bros. Discovery is doing their best to live up to its predecessor and the style of the games that have appealed to fans for decades.
To prove this, the caption for the photo of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage says it all. “It’s Johnny ******* Cage,” the caption jokes, featuring Urban’s Cage as a full-blown action star. “UNCAGED FURY” can be visibly seen on the image. “Mortal Kombat II – coming soon only in theaters,” the caption continues.
Here’s the first look featuring Karl Urban in full character as Johnny Cage:

Hopefully more looks at the highly-anticipated sequel will follow next. As for now, this is a great way to introduce Karl Urban and his new take on such a fan-favorite character. Of course, it remains to be seen how other newcomers and returning characters will be handled.
Simon McQuoid directed the film which was written by Jeremy Slater. McQuoid previously directed the 2021 film adaptation. In addition to Cage, the cast of the film also includes Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, and Josh Lawson as Kano. Other cast members include Max Huang, Tati Gabrielle, Martyn Ford, Adeline Rudolph, and others.
Mortal Kombat II is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 24, 2025. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2021’s Mortal Kombat as we have them. Now that Johnny Cage will be entering the ensemble, and as played by Karl Urban, no less, it’ll certainly be a follow-up worth seeing for any fan.
