With how many Marvel projects are either on the way or in development, it can be easy to forget which films and shows never manage to get off the ground. Now for one such Marvel movie, it looks like that particular project will never have that opportunity after being canceled.
This is certainly disappointing for those involved with the project. After all, a lot of work goes into developing these films. As shared in a recent report, however, this cancellation might make sense given recent developments. It’s unfortunate for fans that would have looked forward to the project, but it makes sense.
It seems as though these flops, and their decision to scrap such spin-offs, led to this Marvel movie being canceled.
As for what film it could have been, however, that remains unknown. Here’s what Deadline shared on the matter:
“Sony,” the outlet mentioned while discussing the studio’s release date announcements, “also said this evening that it has unset a June 27, 2025 release date for an untitled Sony-Marvel movie.”
One only needs to see “Sony-Marvel” to understand what must’ve happened. Sony, who has recently been restructuring their plans for their Marvel operations, has recently struggled with several Spider-Man spin-offs. Films including Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter have all flopped at the box office.
Speculation suggests that the film would have been Sony’s El Muerto project, however, which was one of their Spider-Man spin-offs that never got out of development.
Bad Bunny was attached to star in El Muerto for quite some time, but he eventually left the production. It seemed as though Sony was going to halt their plans for the film then, but they announced that it would still move forward without Bad Bunny. Now, however, they seem to have once again stopped everything altogether due to the recent failure of their Spider-Man spin-offs.
That is, assuming, this canceled Marvel movie was the El Muerto project. For now, however, we’ll have to wait and see if that confirmation comes to light. In the meantime, Sony has moved past their attempts to create a spin-off universe, and the studio has adjusted their focus on the MCU’s Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Spider-Man news as we have it, not only including the aforementioned projects but also Sony’s upcoming Spider-Noir series starring Nicolas Cage. While they’ve canceled some projects, it looks like Sony still has plenty of others in the pipeline.
