Disney Plus is a streaming service with numerous films and shows available, and as such, Disney has become strict with what gets renewed and what doesn’t much like its many competitors. Sadly, this means a fan-favorite Disney Plus series has just been canceled by the service after airing only two seasons.
This surprising development may be disappointing for fans of the show, but it’s not exactly a surprise. After all, streaming services are constantly juggling costs and justifying what makes sense from a budgetary point-of-view.
Sadly, it looks like this series just didn’t perform well enough to warrant a third season from the platform. While the series performed well with viewers and critics, it’s possible that its costs just didn’t work out for the platform.
As shared by a representative for Disney Plus via Variety:
“Disney+ Original series ‘Extraordinary’ will not be returning for a third season on the service,” the Disney Plus representative began.
“We’re so proud of the hilarious, award-winning series brought to life by the incredibly talented British and Irish cast and crew, our production partners at Sid Gentle Films, and the exceptional writing talent of creator Emma Moran.”
The announcement also revealed that another Disney Plus series, Shardlake, has also been canceled alongside Extraordinary. It goes to show that Disney Plus can be quite unpredictable regarding what moves forward on its platform. Especially when one considers that the series Extraordinary performed quite well critically on Disney Plus, with each of its two seasons having 100% scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
One must also remember that Disney Plus has a slew of Marvel offerings to choose from as well, and with the superhero premise of Extraordinary, it possibly created too much of a conflict between the brands as well. In the end, it might’ve been easier for Disney Plus to simply focus on the Marvel side of things.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more Disney Plus updates as we have them. It’s unfortunate to see Extraordinary canceled with only two seasons, but for now, fans can still enjoy those two seasons by streaming them on Disney Plus.
