The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gearing up to present fans with the latest Avengers movies. The past Avengers films have become notable for gathering as many superheroes as possible. This is imminently going to be the case with the upcoming films Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Now Marvel fans seem to be divided over a possible MCU return rumored for the films.
The rumored return would bring back a character previously thought to be deceased in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, that could still be the case, especially if this actor returns as a variant of their beloved MCU character. They wouldn’t be the first actor to do so, after all, and Robert Downey Jr. is set to appear as a variant of Tony Stark beginning with Avengers: Doomsday.
The following rumor was first shared by insider Daniel Richtman. It was then quoted by another source later shared on Reddit, by u/marvelkidy, allowing users to see the headline from Maxblizz and share their thoughts on the matter. The headline as shared on Reddit reads as follows:
“Scarlett Johansson Set to Return in Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ and ‘Secret Wars‘”

As mentioned, however, not everyone is happy about Scarlett Johansson potentially reprising her role. While it could make sense, especially when considering the Multiverse is likely involved, some fans feel it does a disservice to her sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame. Here are some of the responses shared below:
“Please Jesus Christ, no. This ‘mirror, mirror’ evil version of everybody shit is lazy and bad.”
“I love the OG cast but I’m becoming less and less optimistic about Doomsday when it feels like they’re just relying on infinity saga nostalgia”
“This is when the MCU dies”
“Makes sense, why keep any death meaningful”
There were users that felt the idea could have potential, especially if it meant a whole team of twisted Avengers. While it remains to be seen how mainstream audiences might interpret the changes, however, it’s clear that some communities aren’t happy with the idea.
Though the involvement of Scarlett Johansson has yet to be confirmed, her appearance would certainly fit with the ongoing Multiverse theme. Especially when one considers that Robert Downey Jr. is already set to make his MCU return – albeit as Marvel supervillain Doctor Doom.
Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on May 1, 2026 while Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on May 7, 2027. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates regarding the plans for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars as we have them.
