The Gremlins film franchise has held a place in pop culture since the original film was released in 1984. Unlike many other popular films of the era, however, it was only followed by a single sequel in 1990. The film, titled Gremlins 2: The New Batch, ended up performing less successfully than its predecessor and the franchise slowed down until recently. Now it looks like a new Gremlins movie is reportedly in the works.
This isn’t a completely surprising announcement. After all, the franchise was recently revived with an animated series that includes the seasons Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and Gremlins: The Wild Batch. It was also previously shared in 2017 that original Gremlins scribe Chris Columbus was working on a screenplay for a new movie. Now, as shared via Deadline, that still seems to be the case.
The outlet didn’t reveal much, but that Warner Bros. Discovery is fast-tracking a number of new projects based on the studio’s beloved IPs. Gremlins happens to be one of these properties, with Chris Columbus once again mentioned as the writer attached. With Gremlins being one of his earliest works in Hollywood, fans are definitely eager to see his take.
The original sequel was written by Charles S. Haas, so Columbus hasn’t been involved with the series since the first movie. It’s possible that he’ll bring the franchise closer to its roots, especially when considering the more satirical style of the sequel and the fantasy elements featured in the animated show. Of course, only time will tell what Columbus has in mind for the franchise’s future.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on the next Gremlins movie as we have them. Though there isn’t much information at the moment, we can hope that more news will follow in the near future. Especially if Warner Bros. Discovery is serious about getting a third Gremlins film off the ground.
