The filmmaking world will not be the same without him. It’s been confirmed that legendary writer, director, musician, and artist David Lynch has died at age 78. His filmography includes such works as Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, and the television series Twin Peaks.
Fans were previously made aware of Lynch’s health issues when, in 2024, he confirmed to have been diagnosed with emphysema. Sadly, as confirmed by his family on the official Facebook page for David Lynch, he has passed away going into the first month of 2025.
The statement shared by his family reads as follows:
“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’
“It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”
Lynch’s unique style blended a number of genres, including horror, comedy, and drama, and other hits included his first film
Eraserhead,
The Elephant Man loosely based on Joseph Merrick, an earlier adaptation of
Dune, and
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, a feature film set in the world of the beloved TV series he co-created with Mark Frost.
In 2017, Lynch and many of his collaborators returned to the world of
Twin Peaks to create a third season of the series after it was prematurely canceled in 1991. The new season, titled
Twin Peaks: The Return, marks Lynch’s final directorial work as he helmed all eighteen episodes. It received
critical acclaim during its run and continues to be cited as one of Lynch’s greatest works.
David Lynch is survived by his two daughters and two sons. While this is devastating news, at least fans can remember Lynch by the great body of work he’s left behind in just about every medium.
