In the light of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just about every studio, television network, and streaming service has tried to capture some of the superhero hype. However, their projects don’t always see the same success as the MCU. In fact, HBO has just canceled a fan-favorite series after airing just one season on their network.
This news was shared directly by an HBO spokesperson, confirming the disappointing news for fans of the series. Unfortunately, while it looks like they won’t be renewing this particular show for a second season, the network has made it clear that the cast and crew behind the show have left a lasting impression.
As a result, they are expected to continue working with HBO on future projects, although no specific details have been disclosed yet.
Here’s what the statement shared including the title of the canceled superhero series – via Deadline:
“We’re so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the tremendously talented team behind The Franchise, especially Sam Mendes, Jon Brown, Armando Iannucci, and this hilarious ensemble of actors,” the HBO spokesperson shared. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season, we look forward to collaborating with all of them in the future.”
The announcement regarding The Franchise comes not long after its season concluded on November 24, 2024. Ultimately, the reason for its cancellation seems to be a result of the series having “not cracked Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings.” While it has decent reviews, it just never received the viewership numbers needed to renew the series for another season.
As mentioned, The Franchise is a superhero satire series. However, rather than revolving around real superheroes, it depicts life on the set of a superhero film franchise. It’s an interesting way to look at the world of making these movies that have become such a popular piece of pop culture in recent years.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional news regarding HBO and any other canceled projects as we have them. Unfortunately, it looks like the television series The Franchise will be concluded with its one and only season on the platform.
