Max subscribers are giving one of the biggest box office bombs from 2024 another chance. The film, released earlier this year, was met with negative reactions from moviegoers and resulted in major box office losses. Nonetheless, it looks like the film is still performing quite well on the small screen – including a comeback on the streaming service Max.
The 2024 comic book adaptation took great liberties with its characters. As such, it seems to have alienated fans of its titular character. Interestingly, however, it seems to have built its own audience for subverting viewers’ expectations at the same time.
While this doesn’t mean it will ever be as successful as its predecessor, it does look like it’s absolutely successful on Max. In fact, at the time of this writing, the 2024 flop has actually reached the top spot on Max.
The film, titled Joker: Folie À Deux, follows the events of 2019’s Joker from director Todd Phillips. He returned to helm the follow-up, albeit with very different elements, including Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn and several musical numbers. Many of these changes didn’t sit well with fans of the 2019 endeavor, however, including the decision to alter Joaquin Phoenix’s titular Joker.
The character, otherwise known as Arthur Fleck, has a romantic relationship with Gaga’s Harley Quinn throughout the film. By the end, however, he seems to denounce his title as the Joker altogether. In fact, his character even appears to be murdered, with Phillips stating that Arthur Fleck was never intended to be the real Joker.
It’s a ballsy decision that understandably alienated longtime fans. As it continues to find distribution on streaming platforms like Max, however, Joker: Folie À Deux is opening itself to new audiences with the potential to create new fans as well. While it didn’t have the theatrical success of 2019’s Joker, it could very well maintain a cult following of its own.
