Another Netflix series cancellation has just been announced. This time, however, the cancellation was made by Netflix to a pretty major series after a mere two seasons.
Due to the cancellation, however, only two seasons of this particular series managed to be released by the platform. The reason for being such a major title for the service, however, is that its predecessor was a massive television series which lasted for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006.
Deadline further explained that the ratings for the series dropped with its second season, and furthermore, that the eight episodes for Part 3 of the series “did not chart, meaning that they drew under 1.9M in Part 3’s opening weekend, under 1.6M in its first full week and under 1.4M in its second week.”
The news was confirmed over at Deadline as follows:
“Netflix is not proceeding with more installments of That ’90s Show,” the outlet revealed.
“The cancellation comes a little over a month after Part 3 of the That ’70s Show sequel was released Aug. 22. That translates to a two-season run as Netflix releases multi-cam comedies in Parts (aka half-seasons) after their initial run.”
Kurtwood Smith, who stars in the series as Red Forman, shared a statement regarding the show’s cancellation on Instagram. The caption for his post, while grateful to fans for the support, does tease the possibility of That ’90s Show being shopped elsewhere.
To steal Red Forman’s words…we aren’t going to be dumbasses,” he writes towards the end of the post. “We will shop the show, because good grandparents would try hard to get these kids graduated from high school.”
