Author Stephen King is known for having crafted some of the biggest novels of our time. With stories like The Shining, Pet Sematary, and the Dark Tower series, it’s hard not to have an interest in his opinions. Now a tweet from Stephen King has resurfaced in which he calls a Netflix horror series “beautiful.”
The tweet, which was previously posted by King when the series first launched, has since been deleted. Nonetheless, the internet has been reassessing the quote online, and it’s the perfect opportunity for some Netflix subscribers to check out this fan-favorite horror series that happens to be enjoyed by many more viewers than just Stephen King.
For those unfamiliar, the quote shared by King has been recorded online as follows:
“MIDNIGHT MASS, on Netflix: Mike Flanagan has created a dense, beautifully photographed terror tale that climbs to a high pitch of horror by the 7th and last episode. I believe it starts in 10 days.”
This quote can be traced back to the time when the series was first premiering on Netflix, back in 2021. Of course, with so many projects released in the time frame between then and now, it’s likely some viewers missed out. Otherwise, it might be worth checking out again, especially with another King property drawing some similarities between the two.
An adaptation of Stephen King’s own novel Salem’s Lot was recently released on Max, and the original book happened to be one of the inspirations for Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass. Both Salem’s Lot and Midnight Mass revolve around similar concepts, with the Midnight Mass series considered by many King fans to be a more faithful adaptation spiritually than the recent Max release.
After all, it can be difficult to tell a story as intimate as Salem’s Lot in a traditional feature film. The story must include the town itself, how the citizens react to the world around them, and the death of their aging community as vampires take it all over. It’s something that is only briefly touched upon in the movie, but Flanagan‘s Midnight Mass follows all of the same ideas with much more depth. In fact, it even adds its own heavy emphasis on theology to create a very unique take on traditional vampire stories.
Ultimately, Stephen King is right about this horror series on Netflix – it is quite beautiful, horrifying, and worth seeing. Subscribers can currently stream Midnight Mass on Netflix. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional news regarding the latest trending titles on streaming as we have them.
