It’s been an interesting year for Hollywood. A vast majority of the biggest movies of the year have been based on pre-established IPs. As such, if one of these films didn’t meet expectations, then fans were more likely to be disappointed. This has the case with one movie that’s been considered the worst movie of 2024 – and now it’s available on streaming.
In fact, as revealed at the time of this writing, the film has become the number one movie on Max both globally and in the United States. Although the film flopped during its theatrical run just a few months ago, it seems as though viewers are still eager to check the title out at home. While this could eventually see the film receive a cult classic status, only time will tell how it ultimately holds up in that regard.
Either way, it’s interesting to see such a controversial title still win subscribers over on Max. With other competing titles on the platform’s Top 10 list including the likes of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Abigail, and Civil War, it’s still surprising to see this title at #1. Of course, that might also mean subscribers are simply checking out the film to see how bad it is according to the negative reviews it’s received since its release.
The film, titled Joker: Folie À Deux, is the sequel to Todd Phillips 2019 film Joker. While Joker was a success at the box office as well as critics and audiences, Joker 2 received the opposite reaction. In fact, with a much larger budget ranging between $190-200 million, it only grossed $206.4 million at the box office. The studio is no doubt hoping that streaming and home video will help them recoup some of those monumental losses.
The sequel brings back Joaquin Phoenix as the so-called Joker, aka Arthur Fleck, while Lady Gaga makes her debut as his love interest – Harley Quinn. One of the aspects that made this follow-up so divisive is that Fleck is seemingly revealed to have never been the Joker after all. It seems as though director Todd Phillips took a more subversive route to tell the character’s backstory, and that it’s revealed to have never been his backstory at all.
Many viewers felt disappointed by this decision, especially when the first film revolved so heavily around Phoenix’s role as Arthur Fleck and his transformation into the Joker. Others thought the subversive story was a great addition, and that it allowed an aura of mystery to surround the iconic comic book character. Either way, fans are still going to be drawing their own conclusions now that the 2024 movie, which is considered to be the worst of the year, is now available for streaming on Max.
