While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued to flourish over the years, Sony’s attempts have not. Aside from the success of their animated Spider-Verse films, and the mixed reactions to the Venom trilogy, the studio has mostly seen negative reactions to projects including Morbius and Madame Web. As such, it looks like another upcoming Marvel movie from the studio has been canceled.
The news of a cancellation follows reports that Sony is putting their shared universe projects on hold. Kraven the Hunter, which is the next Spider-Man spin-off to be released from the studio, is expected to end this current phase of villain-centered spin-offs. In fact, Sony is said to be placing their focus on the animated film Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the live-action television series Spider-Noir, and the release of Spider-Man 4 with Marvel Studios.
Now, as shared in a new report, this seems to have put a stop to another project that the studio has been attempting to get made for years. If their villain-centered spin-offs were successful, including Morbius, then it’s likely that this particular film would have even seen the light of day. In fact, the post-credits scene attached to Morbius seemed to suggest it was finally happening sooner rather than later.
This project, of course, is none other than the Sinister Six movie that Sony has been frequently teasing over the years – according to The Wrap. The studio has desperately been trying to introduce any number of Spider-Man villains to group together for the project. In fact, its history can be traced back to the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with Andrew Garfield. When that film critically flopped, however, the studio quickly changed their strategy.
They hoped instead to introduce Spider-Man villains with their own unique spin-off films, such as the Venom movies with Tom Hardy, in an effort to build demand for a Sinister Six movie. Now that films like Morbius and Madame Web have flopped, however, and Kraven the Hunter is being estimated to follow suit – Sony is once again dropping plans for this Marvel project.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional news regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe or Sony’s upcoming Marvel projects, including those that have been canceled, as we have them. It’s certainly disappointing that these characters couldn’t have prospered in the way that the MCU’s heroes and villains have, but hopefully it leads to better-received films and shows in the future.
