The 2002 horror movie 28 Days Later sparked a newfound interest in the zombie genre. However, its own potential as a franchise went underutilized for years, only giving way to a single sequel with a different director in 2007 titled 28 Weeks Later. Now original director Danny Boyle has returned for 28 Years Later, and fans can see the newly-released trailer down below.
It’s actually been 22 years since the original film was released, and 17 years since its previous sequel, so it’s about time that a new follow-up got off the ground. Additionally, with the return of director Danny Boyle, it seems as though they want to make up for lost time. 28 Years Later is actually intended to launch an all-new trilogy, with two other films on the way.
In addition to Boyle as the director on this newest entry, original 28 Days Later screenwriter Alex Garland teamed up with Boyle to co-write the screenplay for 28 Years Later. The next film in this trilogy, titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, was directed by Nia DaCosta, written and produced by Boyle and Garland.
Here’s the official trailer for 28 Years Later:
It’s definitely a lot to take in, but as mentioned, it seems as though Boyle and Garland want to make up for lost time. Likewise, 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role as Jim for the new films. If that wasn’t exciting enough, the cast of 28 Years Later also includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding.
The original 28 Days Later certainly did its part to rejuvenate the zombie genre. With an $8 million budget, it managed to gross $84.7 million worldwide. Now we’ll get to see what kind of impact 28 Years Later makes with more than two decades since the original first hit theaters.
Hopefully we’ll have more news regarding this long-awaited sequel and its own follow-ups in the near future. It’s definitely an exciting time for fans of the original 28 Days Later, especially when it seemed likely that we’d never get a proper continuation all of these years later.
