The Marvel Cinematic Universe is being prepared for several major crossover events, namely Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. It was already announced the fan-favorite actor Robert Downey Jr. would be rejoining the MCU, albeit as Doctor Doom, for Avengers: Doomsday. Now, however, it looks like fellow MCU actor Chris Evans will likewise be returning for Avengers: Doomsday in a surprising development.
Evans is widely known for his role as Captain America in the MCU, a mantle that has recently been taken over by Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. The news that Evans will be returning, however, was broken by The Wrap, where the outlet noted “Evans will be involved in some capacity.”
For those wondering whether or not he’ll be returning as Steve Rogers, however, that remains to be seen. As always, it’s possible he could be playing the Steve Rogers we have come to know over the years. Otherwise, he could be playing a variant of the role, or a new character entirely. After all, fans recently saw him return to play the Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine – a role he first played outside the MCU in Fox’s original Fantastic Four movies.
With Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, all bets are off when it comes to Doomsday and Secret Wars, so we’ll have to wait and see how Chris Evans shows up on screen. Either way, it will definitely be an appearance that fans will be excited to have. Hopefully more details will be released soon as we head into 2025.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026, so more details will be released as production begins and news starts to come our way. Of course, the other interesting aspect beyond who Evans could be playing is who else could be appearing. At this rate, the films are bound to be epic Multiverse-themed adventures, so there is no telling who could show up. Especially if Deadpool & Wolverine was any indication of the cards being held up Marvel’s sleeves.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more MCU news as we have it. In the meantime, we now know Chris Evans is set to return for Avengers: Doomsday alongside the likes of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
