While there has only been one Hulk movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character has appeared in a variety of different MCU films and shows. Mark Ruffalo, who plays every MCU iteration of the character outside of the one movie, has been given quite the character arc while playing Hulk. In fact, his current take on the character has been dubbed “Smart Hulk,” and original Hulk actor Lou Ferrigno would rather the MCU Hulk be “mean” again.
This is a sentiment shared by many fans of the character. Although the MCU has covered a lot of ground with Ruffalo’s version of the character, even without giving Ruffalo his own movie, there is plenty of material from the comics that could easily be mined for some Hulk stories that illustrate the absolute rage and brutality within the character.
This level of anger is something almost always present with Lou Ferrigno’s version of the character, which was the original live-action iteration of the Hulk, and he shared his desire for Ruffalo’s Hulk to reach similar levels of anger and rage while speaking with Who Let Us Out.
Here’s what he shared when asked where Marvel Studios should take the character next:
“I would say change the concept and make it more like the original Hulk, authentic, organic, mean, green.”

This would definitely be exciting to see, and a nice change of pace after having “Smart Hulk” for several MCU projects over the years. Of course, it might take a major event to drive Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner angry enough for the Hulk to properly take back over. With two new Avengers films and several other projects in the works, however, Marvel Studios could very well have such an event planned.
As always, we’ll have to wait and see what happens. In the meantime, Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk looks like he’ll be a nice substitute and full of that rage which so often defines the various Hulk characters. Fans will be able to see Red Hulk in action when Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14, 2025.
