The year 2020 was a difficult year for the world. Many industries were hurt by the pandemic, and the film industry was no exception. As such, quite a few movies underperformed or went under the radar entirely. Now one such box office bomb is actually making a comeback on Netflix – and it’s a horror movie to boot.
This particular film was produced by Blumhouse Productions and White Rabbit Productions, while Universal Pictures served as the film’s distributor. Of course, because it was released in 2020, it only took a week before the film was made available on digital video platforms.
Due to this, however, the film bombed at the box office. It ultimately only made $12.4 million in theaters, and that was less than its $14 million budget. Now, it has become the number 5 movie globally on Netflix at the time of this writing, reaching high into the platform’s Top 10 category.
The film, titled The Hunt, is a horror film and political satire directed by Craig Zobel. It was written by Nick Cuse and Damon Lindelof, with a cast that includes Ike Barinholtz, Betty Gilpin, Emma Roberts, and Hilary Swank. The plot of The Hunt revolves around working class people that are abducted to be hunted by group of elites.
Obviously there was some controversy regarding the plot of the film, and so that likely also played a part in its low box office performance between the pandemic and short theatrical window. Nevertheless, Netflix subscribers seem to be rediscovering The Hunt, and it could mean a major comeback for this 2020 horror movie bomb.
