There are an abundance of Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, including films and shows, that fans of the superhero franchise enjoy every day. Despite the vast number of titles in the world today, however, not all of them have received the greenlight. Interestingly, it looks like the star of one such canceled MCU series is now set to return for a new Marvel project.
This particular star was going to appear in the Marvel series New Warriors that was intended to be released on Freeform. The series would have been part of the MCU, and a pilot was shot, with the lead star of the unreleased pilot now returning nearly a decade later for a new Marvel project. That’s right, the production of the New Warriors pilot can be traced back to 2017.
For those familiar with New Warriors, they’ll know that the lead character was none other than Squirrel Girl, a beloved and quirky character otherwise known as Doreen Green from Marvel’s comic book lore. While she didn’t get to make her MCU debut with New Warriors, however, a different Marvel project will be referencing Squirrel Girl and the original actress that was intended to play her.
Milana Vayntrub, who played Squirrel Girl in the unreleased pilot, will be returning to voice the character in the upcoming video game Marvel Rivals. This was revealed in an all-new trailer for the game featuring Squirrel Girl’s abilities on full display that you can view below:

While Marvel Rivals isn’t part of the MCU, it’s nice to see Vayntrub finally have the opportunity to play Squirrel Girl after all these years. Additionally, it could mean that Marvel is still well-aware of her participation with the unmade New Warriors series, and that we could see more Squirrel Girl content in the future. With feature films and Disney Plus projects both in development, anything is possible.
Marvel Rivals is set to launch on December 6, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates regarding Marvel Rivals and other potential appearances from Milana Vayntrub, especially to know whether or not she’ll appear as Squirrel Girl elsewhere in the MCU. Fans would definitely love to see her character make more appearances, and if Marvel Rivals is a success, then maybe that’s what will happen.
