Margot Robbie was one of several major stars to have appeared in the 2022 film Babylon. Interestingly, the film which revolved around the early days of Hollywood, ultimately flopped at the box office. Now Margot Robbie is looking back to say she “can’t figure out why people hated” Babylon.
Robbie discussed the matter while appearing on the podcast The Talking Pictures. While she acknowledges she’s biased for having appeared in the film, she can’t seem to wrap her head around why general audiences didn’t enjoy the movie. In fact, she suggests that it could become a cult film in the future.
Here’s what the Barbie star stated:
“I don’t get it either. I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it,” Robbie began. “I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, Babylon didn’t do well at the time?’ Like when you hear that Shawshank Redemption was a failure at the time and you’re like like, ‘How is that possible?’”
Fortunately, while Robbie was confused by the movie’s reception, she did have a great time during its production. In fact, she praised the film’s director, Damien Chazelle, and shared the following about his vision for Babylon:
“Damien is so thorough,” Robbie noted. “Do you know what I loved so much about working with him? I felt like no one had really put their foot to the floor with the gas, but he wanted that all the time. He wanted more always. Even when we were prepping.”
It’s quite possible that Robbie is right, and that Babylon could become part of a major reassessment in the future. Of course, there is no way to predict the future, so ultimately only time will tell how Babylon continues to be received. In the meantime, it’s nice to know that Margot Robbie herself is proud of her work on the film.
