At a time when sequels are more common than not, it’s becoming increasingly frustrating when certain films have yet to receive one. This is the case with one 2018 movie which just so happens to be popular enough to stay in the Netflix Top 10 for the entire month before leaving the platform.
In fact, at the time of this writing, this particular 2018 film climbed to the number 6 most-watched movie on Netflix – showing that there is still an audience for the movie. This has placed it ahead of major hits like Minions: The Rise of Gru and Let Go, while also placing it just below the platform’s #5 release – Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson.
Ultimately, though, it shows that audiences are still ready to support this 2018 effort from director Robert Rodriguez. Furthermore, it’s an example that rightsholders 20th Century Studios and Disney could likely benefit from releasing a sequel.
The film is none other than Alita: Battle Angel, based on the manga series Gunnm also known as Alita: Battle Angel in English. While Rodriguez directed the film, James Cameron was involved with the project for years, and he wrote the screenplay alongside Laeta Kalogridis.
It revolves around a cyborg, the titular Alita, who awakens without any kind of memory. The character, who has a robot body and a human brain, must venture forward to find her own destiny in the future. It’s a storyline that has received praise from fans who are also quite fond of the visuals and action setpieces.
Rosa Salazar stars in the film as Alita, with other cast members being Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, and Keean Johnson.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more Alita: Battle Angel news as we have it. Though it hasn’t yet been confirmed, there appears to have been some talks about a sequel, and the success of the 2018 endeavor on streaming platforms like Netflix will only add fuel to the fire. Hopefully we’ll have a more positive update in the near future for fans that have been anxiously waiting to see the story of Alita: Battle Angel continued.
