The 1999 horror film Deep Blue Sea has become recognized as a fan-favorite horror film and one of the few shark attack movies outside of Jaws worth remembering. As such, it did eventually receive direct-to-video sequels in 2018 and 2020. Now, however, LL Cool J has revealed his desire to return for a new Deep Blue Sea sequel.
The actor and rapper, whose music also played during the end credits of Renny Harlin’s Deep Blue Sea, revealed as much about wanting to return to The Standard. His character, Sherman “Preacher” Dudley, was not brought back for either direct-to-video sequel despite having survived the original movie.
Now, here’s what he has to say about coming back for another installment:
“Deep Blue Sea could be a lot of fun to revise, you know to do a new Deep Blue Sea,” he shared to the publication. He also added that “In Too Deep could be fun to do a sequel.”
Obviously this doesn’t indicate anything official is in the works. However, legacy sequels have become quite popular, and it might be a way to win fans over after the two direct-to-video films. After all, that added bit of continuity could do a lot to bring audiences in for a new Deep Blue Sea film after Deep Blue Sea 2 and Deep Blue Sea 3 each had very little to offer in that department.
The original Deep Blue Sea, released in 1999, also starred the likes of Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows, Jacqueline McKenzie, Michael Rapaport, Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd, Samuel L. Jackson, and Aida Turturro. Its plot revolves around a new breed of intelligent shark created in an effort to cure Alzheimer’s disease.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Deep Blue Sea film franchise as we have them. While it doesn’t seem likely that LL Cool J really will return for a follow-up, it didn’t seem likely that we’d eventually get two direct-to-video sequels either. In a world where anything can happen, perhaps we will get to see another Deep Blue Sea sequel with LL Cool J returning.
