It’s been an interesting year for Sydney Sweeney, with plenty of ups and downs, and a notable time at the beginning of 2024 in which she was a notable topic of conversation. Specifically because Sweeney received backlash from Hollywood producer Carol Baum who criticized Sweeney for being “not pretty” and furthermore, that she “can’t act.” Now Sydney Sweeney is releasing a new statement to say that Hollywood’s support of women “is fake.”
Sweeney expressed as much while speaking with Vanity Fair. She directly comments on how “disheartening” it is for women to tear down other women. This leads her to say that Hollywood is simply using their status of “women empowering other women” as a means to be contradictory behind-the-scenes.
Here’s what she shared:
“It’s very disheartening to see women tear other women down, especially when women who are successful in other avenues of their industry see younger talent working really hard — hoping to achieve whatever dreams that they may have — and then trying to bash and discredit any work that they’ve done,” Sweeney said. “This entire industry, all people say is ‘Women empowering other women.’ None of it’s happening. All of it is fake and a front for all the other shit that they say behind everyone’s back.”
Sydney Sweeney added her reasoning for why women must feel the need to compete with one another:
“I mean, there’s so many studies and different opinions on the reasoning behind it,” she continued. “I’ve read that our entire lives, we were raised — and it’s a generational problem — to believe only one woman can be at the top. There’s one woman who can get the man. There’s one woman who can be, I don’t know, anything. So then all the others feel like they have to fight each other or take that one woman down instead of being like, ‘Let’s all lift each other up.’ I’m still trying to figure it out. I’m just trying my best over here. Why am I getting attacked?”
There are certainly plenty of good points in what Sweeney has to say. After all, she was front-and-center at unnecessary backlash made against her by a Hollywood producer that also happened to be a woman. Nevertheless, one can hope that people will try to do better and help make Hollywood a place that can have women empowering other women.
