Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has crafted what many consider to be the greatest movies of our modern Hollywood era. Of course, fans of the filmmaker also know his style pays homage to exploitation films like those released in the 1970’s. As such, Quentin Tarantino is quite the historian, and it may be surprising to hear him say that we’re currently in the “worst era in Hollywood history.”
It’s no surprise that modern films are quite different from what was being released in previous decades. There are many more reboots, major IPs, and superhero films than ever before. Of course, this also means there are a variety of successful franchises that prove Hollywood is at least doing well as far as finances go.
As shared by Tarantino, however, he revealed in the 19th episode of his podcast Video Archives that the modern era just doesn’t cut it for him. In fact, he referenced it in a direct comparison to another era he considers the worst for filmmaking.
Here’s what the Pulp Fiction director shared:
“Even though the ‘80s was the time that I probably saw more movies in my life than ever—at least as far as going out to the movies was concerned—I do feel that ‘80s cinema is, along with the ‘50s, the worst era in Hollywood history,” Tarantino says. “Matched only by now, matched only by the current era!”
On that note, it might even be surprising to hear him say that the 1980’s or 1950’s are the worst eras for Hollywood filmmaking as well. Especially when it comes to the 1980’s, which so many people have celebrated in recent years. The nostalgia for that particular decade has been quite strong. Similarly, there was a strong sense of nostalgia for the 1950’s during the 1980’s as well.
It’s an interesting concept to consider, especially with someone as major as Tarantino making these bold statements about Hollywood. Nonetheless, people are still going to like what they like – whether it’s from our modern Hollywood era or that of the 1950’s and 1980’s.
