The 1994 film Speed is still a fan-favorite title for fans of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. It was followed by a lesser-received sequel in 1997 titled Speed 2: Cruise Control. Now, several decades later, 20th Century Studios seems open to making Speed 3.
20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell revealed as much himself while speaking with THR. Though Asbell couldn’t guarantee that such a film would ever be made by the studio, he was quite open to the possibility.
His comments were made as a response to Sandra Bullock, co-star of Speed alongside Keanu Reeves and the only one of the two to return for Speed 2: Cruise Control, who believed Hollywood wasn’t brave enough to produce a third. Here’s what he shared on that front, adding a humorous response at first:
“Hollywood is brave enough. We are brave enough. We are sitting by the phone.”
He continued to explain that a Speed 3, while possible, is something that would be worth making. Furthermore, it would have to interest both Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock to return. After all, Reeves famously declined returning for Speed 2, which is part of the reason it was so negatively-received upon release.
“It is one of those last movies that we haven’t remade. And to really be a reason to come back, it’s got to be a great idea and an idea that excites (Bullock and Keanu Reeves). Because that’d be the reason to see it,” Asbell explained. “It’s obviously a really important title for us, but it’s not something we would handle lightly or just try to press them into service. They’d have to be a part of the development of that idea.”
It’s nice to see that the studio is willing to make a new Speed movie, but only if it were made with the right goals in mind. Furthermore, it’s nice knowing that both Reeves and Bullock would have to be a part of the project if they ever did it.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates regarding 20th Century Studios and their upcoming film projects as we have them. While Speed 3 isn’t a priority for them as of yet, it seems as though they’re open to the possibility, which could excite fans who’d love to see a proper continuation with both Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock returning.
