The 1974 novel Carrie launched the career of celebrated author Stephen King. Now, several adaptations and a few decades later, a new interpretation of Carrie is being crafted as a series on Amazon Prime Video. Perhaps most excitingly, however, is that Mike Flanagan will produce the new Carrie series.
As shared by Deadline, Flanagan will act as showrunner on the new series, which is said to tell the story of Carrie as “an eight-episode series for Amazon.” This will be the longest adaptation of the novel yet, with previous adaptations ranging from theatrical features to a 2002 telefilm.
Mike Flanagan will also executive produce the series alongside Trevor Macy. Other details regarding the behind-the-scenes of the project are being kept under wraps, though they just opened a writers room so it’s expected that the show will get underway quite soon. Hopefully more information will be released in the near future.
For those unfamiliar, the plot of King’s novel and its adaptations all revolve around the same concept. A young girl, named Carrie White, discovers that she has telekinesis in a rather unique coming-of-age way. Unfortunately, she’s bullied by her classmates and sheltered by her overly-religious mother, and it creates a series of events that do not turn out well for anyone involved.
The story was famously adapted by director Brian De Palma for the big screen in 1976, something which also helped popularize adapting King’s works for the screen. As such, it will be exciting to see how this new effort turns out, especially with Flanagan attached. He’s worked on several Stephen King projects in the past with several more said to be in development alongside Carrie.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the upcoming Carrie series for Amazon Prime Video from showrunner Mike Flanagan as we have them. There’s still plenty of potential to mine from King’s original novel, especially when considering how much content previous adaptations had to leave out.
