This year’s Alien: Romulus has been widely considered a return to form for the Alien film franchise. It brought viewers back to the time period of Alien and Aliens. Furthermore, it was a critical and box office success as a result. Now it looks like a sequel to Alien: Romulus is in the works.
The film certainly had an open-ended conclusion, in which characters Rain and Andy could be given any destination or storyline to pursue next. Now, according to 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell, this is indeed the premise they’re looking at for the next Alien film.
As shared with THR, not only are they working on a deal to have director Fede Alvarez return, but he emphasizes the likelihood of having Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson reprise their roles as Rain and Andy, respectively. Here’s what he stated:
“We’re working on a sequel idea now. We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede [Alvarez], but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on. The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were real highlights of the film.”
Asbell continued to explain how this will impact the continuation of Alien: Romulus:
And so I always think of it like, ‘Wow, where do people want to see them go next?’ We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I fell in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is.”
It could certainly be an exciting step forward for the franchise, especially considering the time period in which the newest Alien film was set. There’s plenty of ground and lore to cover, and with nods to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant even in the mix, there are numerous possibilities for a Romulus sequel.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Alien updates as we have them, as this is far from the only project currently in the works. Fortunately for fans of Alien: Romulus, however, it looks like a direct follow-up with the movie’s surviving characters is indeed going to happen.
