The 1991 book American Psycho, written by Bret Easton Ellis, was a rather influential novel. It would inspire the 2000 film of the same name, among multiple other projects, and now it’s been revealed a new film adaptation of American Psycho is currently in the works.
The property has previously been the subject of other films, comics, and related media, but a new film adaptation of such a classic story (which already paved the way for an equally iconic film) is a bold step by Lionsgate. Fortunately, as shared via Bloody-Disgusting, they’ve hired a skilled director for the job: Luca Guadagnino.
A few of Guadagnino’s recent endeavors include the 2022 film Bones and All and another major reinterpretation, 2018’s Suspiria. As such, Guadagnino is already recognized for his work in the horror genre and many fans consider his work on Suspiria to be just as good – if not better – as the original film. This no doubt makes him a solid choice to try and create a version of American Psycho that’s closer to its source material and also perfect for a new generation to enjoy.
In addition to Guadagnino as the film’s director, the new take on American Psycho is set to be written by Scott Z. Burns. His previous credits include The Report and The Bourne Ultimatum.
Others associated with the new American Psycho from Lionsgate include Frenesy Films who will produce the feature and executive producer Sam Pressman who will produce via Pressman Film. His father, Edward R. Pressman, previously produced the original adaptation.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson shared the following statement regarding the new adaptation:
“We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate,” Fogelson began. “Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.”
