Fans of one Disney film in particular will be excited to know a sequel is on the way. What’s especially exciting about this specific follow-up, however, is that its set to arrive 22 years after its predecessor was released! It’s surely about time, especially with several original cast members set to return.
The sequel has been teased for the last several years. Only now, however, has an official release date been set. With the continuation officially in production, it seemed to be the perfect opportunity for the official Disney account to tease its inevitable release next year.
Here’s the caption that was shared with an image of the film’s two stars in a very similar pose to how they appeared in the iconic original movie:
“TGIF,” the caption begins. “#FreakierFriday arrives in theaters August 8, 2025!”

It’s definitely a nostalgic image and that seems to be the general consensus from those who’ve commented in response to the post. Of course, quite a bit of time has passed since the original Freaky Friday was released in 2003. Now, more than two decades later, fans will get to see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprise their roles from the original film which will no doubt include an equally-freaky body swap.
Nisha Ganatra is directing the new sequel from a screenplay written by Jordan Weiss. The brand is overall based on the novel Freaky Friday from author Mary Rodgers first published in 1972. Now, decades later, fans will get to see Freakier Friday hit theaters on August 8, 2025.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more Disney news as we have it, including any other updates regarding Freakier Friday, aka Freaky Friday 2. Hopefully this long-awaited sequel to the original Disney film will be worth the wait, especially with the likes of both Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan returning.
