Update: Following the publishing of this story, background artist Davey Cummings released the following statement:
“Hey guys, thnx so much for the follow and likes. Just wanted to announce that I actually have no idea if Velma is getting a Season 3 or not. Please do not take my posts as directions that Warner is going in.”
The story remains as originally written before the statement – and it is still unknown if Velma will be getting a third season.
The Scooby-Doo franchise has explored numerous concepts throughout the decades. However, none have seemingly been more divisive than Velma. Now, after two seasons on Max, it appears that Velma has been seemingly canceled by the platform.
Though there hasn’t been a statement from the studio on the matter, background artist Davey Cummings who has been involved with the series revealed the cancellation on Instagram. In fact, he was quite adamant that the series will not be receiving a third season at all.
Here’s what he shared while also insisting how much fun he’s had working on the series:
“Backgrounds I painted for Velma Halloween Special. So fun working with this crew. There will not be a season 3, but I hope I get to work with these amazing talented people again one day. GO WATCH VELMA HALLOWEEN SPECIAL ON MAX!!”

While this is our first indication that the series has been axed, especially after the new Halloween special was released, it’s not exactly a full surprise. Especially when one considers the reception that Velma has received so far, which has been quite negative from both audiences and critics.
Of course, some viewers simply love to troll the series, but it seems to have definitely struck a nerve with the core Scooby-Doo audience. The more mature style of humor and drastic changes made to the iconic characters, including an absence from Scooby himself, seems to have just rubbed the fanbase the wrong way. Especially when Velma took a more satirical approach to the beloved franchise – and now the Velma series has been canceled.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Scooby-Doo news and other Max updates as we have them. While Velma has come to an end, there are still plenty of other Scooby-Doo projects on the way, and it’s more than likely these will be designed to be more fan-friendly.
