Actor Charlie Hunnam is set to portray the notorious grave robber and murderer Ed Gein for the third season of Monster, the hit Netflix series which previously depicted Jeffrey Dahmer for its first season and brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez for its second.
The series, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, has been a massive hit for the streaming platform. Now, as shared via THR, Charlie Hunnam is prepared to bring the show’s next titular “monster” to the screen: Ed Gein.
Of course, there have been adaptations of the Ed Gein story in the past, and even more horror movies influenced by the disturbing individual. In fact, the likes of Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs have all lifted aspects from Gein’s life to tell their respective tales.
The next season of Monster is said to begin production next month. Other details regarding the new season, including who will star alongside Hunnam, have yet to be revealed. However, with the news of the third season coming just ahead of the release of its second, there’s still plenty of material to keep fans occupied.
Ryan Murphy, co-creator of the series, has led an interesting career on television over the years. While he was initially recognized for his work on shows including Nip/Tuck and Glee, he become a major name in the horror genre for his seasonal anthology series American Horror Story. This series paved the way for two spin-offs including American Crime Story and American Horror Stories, with two more in development.
As such, Monster seems to connect with viewers by following the anthology format of American Horror Story, while delving into a different kind of horror the explores the disturbed individuals of our real world and the despicable acts they’ve committed.
The second season of Monster, titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, will become available on Netflix on September 19, 2024. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the next season of Monster and any other projects from Ryan Murphy as we have them.
