A surprising horror movie is dominating the charts at Netflix. The film, first released in 2018, was initially met with negative reviews. However, its recent performance on digital streaming platforms suggests that viewers are finally reevaluating the feature.
Interestingly, while the horror movie received mixed-to-negative reviews, it was far from a financial failure. In fact, the film managed to earn $137.1 million at the box office with a budget of only $13 million. Its success in that regard even prompted the release of another franchise follow-up in 2021 with another currently said to be in the works.
What was especially controversial for this film, however, is that it was a prequel to its respective franchise. As such, viewers were a lot harsher when watching the film, judging it for its accuracy or inaccuracy regarding details and lore from other entries.
The film, titled The First Purge, is the chronological first entry in the Purge franchise and the fourth installment overall. As revealed by FlixPatrol, while viewers had mixed feelings about the film upon its initial release, it is currently the Number 8 film streaming on Netflix.
This indicates that fans are still eager to watch the film even if it wasn’t positively received at the time of its first release. Of course, it’s not surprising considering just how popular The Purge and its follow-ups have become over the years. Especially when you remember that this film is chronologically the first and thus an easy to choice when binging the franchise.
The First Purge actually gives viewers insight regarding the fictional annual event, in which all crime is considered legal for twelve hours. The flick explores how it became a nationwide event after the events of the film which are restricted to Staten Island. While there are some plot inconsistencies with other installments, it’s generally a very interesting and unique film that should still appeal to fans of the franchise.
