A new live-action movie based on Masters of the Universe is currently in the works. The project has been in development hell for quite some time, but Amazon MGM Studios is eager to finally get the film off the ground. In fact, a new report claims that they want none other than Jared Leto to play Skeletor in the film.
This report was shared by The InSneider, with Leto said to have been offered the role of Skeletor by Amazon MGM Studios. The timing comes not long after the announcement that Alison Brie has joined the film as Evil-Lyn, a character that is often seen working alongside Skeletor throughout all of the different Masters of the Universe iterations.
In addition to the possibility of Leto and the recent addition of Alison Brie, we also know that actor Nicholas Galitzine has already been cast as the film’s He-Man with Camila Mendes playing Teela. With so many cast members now attached to the film, it seems to be closer than ever to finally happening.
Of course, while the film has been stuck in development hell for quite a few years, it’s far from the first live-action adaptation based on Masters of the Universe. The first live-action film, likewise titled Masters of the Universe, was released in 1987. It starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. In which case, both Galitzine and potentially Jared Leto will have some major shoes to fill.
Travis Knight will direct the film which was written by Chris Butler. Previous drafts for the film were written by David Callaham, and brothers Aaron and Adam Nee.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more Masters of the Universe news as we have it. While it’s yet to be confirmed if Jared Leto really will take on the role of Skeletor, he’ll certainly be an interesting choice to see on the big screen as the iconic villain.
