Indeed, Netflix has announced that a follow-up to Adam Sandler’s hit comedy Happy Gilmore is finally on the way. After nearly three decades, it’s quite a surprise, but Sandler is set to reprise his role as the titular character after so many years. Additionally, we also know that Christopher McDonald will be reprising his role as Shoot McGavin for the project and Julie Bowen will return as Virginia Venit. Benny Safdie will also be joining the cast after collaborating with Sandler on Uncut Gems.
Kyle Newacheck will direct the project which is being co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy who co-wrote the original. While Newacheck wasn’t involved with the original film, he has directed several episodes of What We Do In The Shadows. Otherwise, it looks like plenty of individuals involved with the original classic will be returning to keep the sequel close in style and tone.
The original sports comedy film was directed by Dennis Dugan. It revolves around Sandler’s character, a failed ice hockey player, who eventually learns that he has a talent for playing golf instead.
