Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been happy to have Spider-Man part of its story since Captain America: Civil War. Tom Holland’s take on the superhero was given his own solo-films, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, in addition to a number of other appearances. In addition to these other appearances, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is set to return in Spider-Man 4 – though the film appears to be reportedly facing a major overhaul.
It’s worth noting that this report about an overhaul should be taken with a grain of salt. However, knowing the creative differences between Marvel Studios and Sony in the past, it certainly wouldn’t be surprising if the two corporate entities were having trouble settling on a single idea. In fact, it’s been previously said that the film is going in a direction against the direction of both producer Kevin Feige and star Tom Holland.
Now, according to insider @DanielRPK, this new take wanted by Sony is officially moving forward. Though it was previously reported that Spider-Man 4 would be something of a street-level movie, one that could see Spidey team up with Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, that’s no longer the case due to an alleged overhaul. Fans that hoped to see the two go up against Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin will get a much different story instead.
Of course, it’s possible that the exclusion of Daredevil could be due to the respective overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again. While this makes sense, it seems as though the street-level focus of the film is being dropped entirely. According to @DanielRPK, the film will instead focus on a Multiverse story much like its predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The Multiverse has been a major theme throughout the MCU’s most recent projects. As a result, it’s not exactly surprising, especially since Sony has seen success with the concept in both No Way Home as well as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its own sequel. For this iteration, however, it’s said that actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would both be brought back as their respective Spider-Men to assist Tom Holland’s Spider-Man much like in No Way Home.
Other details are being kept under wraps, and this overhaul has yet to be confirmed by the studios. However, it does make sense given what we’ve seen from both the MCU and Sony so far. Hopefully more details will be released soon.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Marvel Cinematic Universe updates as we have them. It certainly looks like the Spider-Man film franchise is going through a lot of changes, both on the Marvel and Sony sides of the property, but hopefully the end result will still be enough to make fans happy. As always, we’ll just have to see what happens.
